Herb Haneman

Herb HanemanHerbert Albert Haneman, Jr. was born on July 30, 1944, the son of Herbert Albert Haneman, Sr. and Mamie Hopkins Haneman in the City of Portsmouth, VA.  In 1968 he married Mary Harms. They have two children, Beth Haneman-Rooks and Bert Haneman, along with two grandchildren.

After attending Churchland High School, he enlisted in the USCG.  During his enlistment he graduated from the Groton, CTEngine Training Center.  During his service in the USCG he was fortunate enough to visit the South Pacific, Australia, and Antarctica.  He is a member in good standing in King Neptune’s Court and a full-fledged “Shellback”.

Upon completion of his USCG service he attended Norfolk Business College and then began his employment with Western Branch Diesel, Inc. WBD was established by his father and Roy Sorrell in 1946.  Like many companies in the post-war economy WBD, as a distributor for Detroit Diesel, experienced continuous growth.

Upon the death of Herbert Haneman, Sr. in 1972, Herb, Jr. began taking a more active role in the overall management of the business.  Under his leadership the company has continued to grow and now has eight branches located inVirginia, West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky. Herbert Haneman Sr., in addition to preparing his son to take the reins of WBD also instilled in him what it takes to be a good citizen to the community by offering one’s time to the community’s betterment.

Herb Haneman Jr. has served as a board member for many charitable organizations and given generously of his time and experience to help those in need.
