We had a luncheon in his honor. WBD’s President Herb Haneman was in attendance, spoke & presented Dan with a gift from the Company. Our Gen. Serv. Mgr. – John Cottle spoke, as did Dan Dixon – Gen. Parts Mgr., and Jon King – Parts & Service Marketing Mgr. Dan’s wife Eliene, his daughter Trisha and son Paul were here, also son in law Victor and cousin Brenda. Dan’s replacement and friend Bob Stuart presented Dan with gifts from co-workers and Allison Transmission, on behalf of Gary Cashwell. Last but not least his friends and co workers who have great admiration for him and will miss him.

Dan came out Saturday and helped us out of a pinch, Truck 22 was losing prime and we had our on call mechanic tied up on another issue with another truck. We called Dan because he got great reviews from the guys at the station and they can be a hard bunch to please. They sent me an email about how Dan stayed with the prime issue until it was resolved and during the test drive he found an issue with the turbo charger, you had one in stock and he installed it and they seem to be very happy with the performance of the truck now.

Thank you for the great service and for being a partner with Henrico Fire in providing service to the citizens of Henrico County. Your staff is just as important in putting out the fires and getting the sick and injured to the hospital as the firefighters in our organization.

Unveiling highway speed Gradall excavators with our new AutoDrive™ automatic transmission system will be the highlight of our Series IV introduction at ConExpo-Con/Agg next week.

Our AutoDrive system features a six-speed Allison transmission with push-button controls and a new Cushman transfer case – the heart of our new, highly functional remote drive design enabling operators to reposition the carrier from the upper cab. We believe this will be a popular feature for Gradall operators as well as those who are responsible for training operators – especially those who work in cities and drive through congested traffic areas.

Series IV models also include some other enhancements that we look forward to showing you, including our new Tier 4i Mercedes engines. But the first thing you’ll notice on the XL 4100 IV model we’re displaying is the new high-visibility color scheme. It’s yellow, with black and red accents, responding to many requests from the field for a brighter, more visible color on busy job sites.

Starting in April, all Gradall excavators will share the yellow color scheme. To offer a glimpse of the new look you’ll see on the other models, we’ll have a yellow XL 4200 III crawler in the booth.

The XL 3100 IV engine will generate 218 net horsepower, the XL 4100 IV will produce 245 net horsepower and the XL 5100 IV engine has 265 net horsepower. Over 80 percent of the service parts on each machine are interchangeable, simplifying inventory processes to assure normal service parts are available. Other new features will include a more powerful electrical system with high visibility LED lighting.

Some other basic performance specifications for the new models include the following:

• XL 3100 IV 4 x 2 models weigh 40,930 lbs. (18,566 kg) and 4 x 4 models weigh 41,720 lbs. (18,924 kg). They have a maximum boom reach at groundline of 27 feet, 5 inches (8.4 m); and they have 17,900 lbs. (80 KN) of rated bucket breakout force.
• XL 4100 IV 6 x 4 models weigh 48,894 lbs. (22,178 kg) and 6 x 6 models weigh 50,925 lbs. (23,099 kg). They have a maximum boom reach of 30 feet, 3 inches (9.2 m) at groundline; and they have 24,900 lbs. (111 kN) of rated bucket breakout force.
• XL 5100 IV 6 x 4 models weigh 56,880 lbs. (25,800 kg) and 6 x 6 models weigh 58,397 lbs. (26,488 kg). They have a maximum boom reach of 33 feet, 9 inches (10.3 m) at groundline; and have 24,900 lbs. (111 kN) of rated bucket breakout force.

“Governments and contractors prefer our highway speed models because they save time and labor, eliminating the need for a lowboy trailer to transport the machines over interstate highways and roads to job sites,” said Thomas. “In addition, they can be easily driven from one job to another and then back to the safety of the equipment yard at night.”

With high-pressure, load-sensing hydraulics and the famous Gradall telescoping boom that tilts 220 degrees, today’s Gradall excavators are more versatile than ever, using a wide range of attachments including grading, excavating and pavement removal buckets as well as grapples, hammers, boom extensions and more.

“With just one Gradall excavator, a contractor can handle excavation, demolition, V-shaped ditching and material movement and then create a slope, final grade and finish the cleanup,” said Thomas. “By not requiring many different machines to handle each of those jobs, there is a measurable savings for the end-user.”

Having a single, fuel-efficient engine provides a savings in the cost of the machines as well as in the expense of routine maintenance. New Gradall excavators also feature other service advantages including longer intervals between recommended maintenance.

ConExpo-Con/Agg is held every three years and is expected to attract 150,000 people from throughout the world to see equipment innovations on display in 2.2 million square feet of exhibit space. This year’s show chairman is Mike Haberman, president of Gradall Industries.

Gradall excavators will be displayed in the Alamo Group booth, which also will showcase the Vacall AllExcavate, a new hydro-excavator that draws upon Vacall’s jetting and vacuum power that leads the industry in sewer cleaning. Vacall products also are produced by Gradall Industries.

The booth also will feature machines produced by two other Alamo companies – a new street sweeper by Schwarze Industries of Huntsville, Alabama, and a Rivard trencher manufactured in France.

Engines1  worked with Webasto Marine to secure a best-in-class air conditioning system for installation on this cutting edge yacht. The configuration consisted of five FCF Series units with digital controls to cool all of the interior cabin spaces.

Upon conclusion of the project, our team was invited to join the VIP debut party on the docks of the Miami Yacht & Brokerage Show this past February.

Engines1 & Webasto teams with Jeff Burton at the Jarrett Bay 46 "Splash Bash"

Several criteria must be met when considering batteries. The batteries must withstand a wide variety of conditions from sub freezing to desert temperatures as well as the constant pounding and vibration found in open ocean racing. The batteries must withstand a deep discharge and accept a high recharge rate from charging equipment. This must be accomplished with minimal fuel consumption and absolute minimal time delay. All equipment on these vessels run on DC power. Additionally the vessels must carry an absolute minimum amount of fuel as fuel adds weight and weight slows the speed and slow boats do not win races.

Based on the performance of the batteries during the 2008 Volvo Around the World Race the Puma Team again selected the Energy1 product as the choice for the 2011 Around the World Race. The original plan was to use 1 set of batteries for boat testing, tuning and the Trans-Atlantic crossing for the race start then switch to a fresh set of batteries for the start of the around the world race. The batteries performed so well that the original batteries were kept in service for the entire first half the the race. Batteries were switched in the Pacific Ocean segment due to an electronic component that caused concern over possible battery damage. In the 2008 VOR the Puma boat finished 2nd overall.

In an email from the Puma Ocean Racing team dated March 2009, Sean wrote:

I have been meaning to touch base with you over the past couple weeks but have failed to do so. The team is currently in Boston after the completion of Leg 6 from Rio last weekend. The start of Leg 7 to Ireland is on Saturday May 16th. We have been greatly satisfied with the performance of the batteries. For the most part everything has exceeded expectations. We did have an issue with our “second set” of batteries when our battery “combiner” shorted.

There are a couple of factors that effect fuel burn rates on these boats: power consumption, main engine vs. generator, alternators and batteries. All teams have taken different approaches to in trying to come up with the best solution. We do not know the exact numbers for all the teams but we do know that we burn a lot less fuel than all the other teams. We are certain that our Energy1 Batteries have contributed to this. This has allowed us to carry less fuel than all the other teams and has been a big advantage to us.

Puma One Racing - Volvo Around the World Race

We are a very pleased with their performance and are thrilled that you were willing to supply them to us. As we near the completion of the event I would like the ability to talk to you guys to see if there is anything else we can learn from all of this. I know that if I was involved in another syndicate I would certainly be looking to use NorthStar/Energy1 batteries again and I am sure other teams would be as well.
