MTU Onsite Energy, the global Tognum Group brand of distributed energy systems, will now offer continuous power systems in North America. These systems generating electricity and heat (CHP) run on natural gas, biogas, sewage gas or landfill gas and have been successfully installed in Europe and Asia for over 35 years. The wide range of usable fuels opens the way to a large number of applications, such as farming operations, municipal buildings, hospitals, campuses and manufacturing facilities.

“Due to the population and the parallel economic growth we will have a constantly rising demand for energy all over the world, and this technology means that electricity and heat can be generated onsite where they are needed – reliably, extremely efficiently and in an environmentally friendly way,” said Ulrich Kemnitz, executive vice president for Onsite Energy at Tognum AG. ‘This is an important contribution for the future world’s sustainable development.”

As seen in MTU Report, May 2012:
Standby Power System from Western Branch Diesel & MTU Onsite Energy Integral to Design Efficiency

Wholesale data center provider focuses on energy savings, low environmental impact and high reliability with generator sets that are already outfitted with advanced exhaust aftertreatment or designed to readily accept it.
Data centers are big users of electric power. Rack upon rack of computer servers can consume up to 300 watts of electricity for each square foot of floor space, which adds up to a lot of electric power consumed every hour of every day, 365 days a year. In addition, servers give off that energy as heat, which must be taken away by the facility’s air conditioning system. Then, to ensure customers have reliable service even during a utility outage, data facilities require a backup power system that includes UPSs and standby generators.
Power Loft I @ Innovation (“Power Loft”) is winning in the effort to reduce energy consumption and increase the sustainability of data centers. Located in Manassas, VA, Power Loft’s LEED Gold-certified facility incorporates a unique design with sustainable building features that reduce electricity demand and minimize environmental footprint.

From the May 2012 issue of Fleet Magazine, written by Liz Fraim, Commercial Vehicle Marketing Specialist, Webasto:
Depending on the year and model of the engine, idling can consume up to 1 gallon of fuel per hour. Idling produces harmful emissions, is very costly, wastes a significant amount of fuel and can contribute to engine wear. Fortunately, there are good antiidling options available today that virtually eliminate the need to idle. By eliminating unnecessary idling, fleets can greatly improve fuel efficiency.
Cost of Idling
In North America, an average truck will idle for driver comfort an average of 1,500 hours per year. At today’s fuel prices of approximately $4.00 per gallon of diesel fuel, more than $6,000 per year is idled away. That’s a pretty big dent out of profits for fleet owners when you multiply $6,000 times the number of vehicles in the fleet.

Hobet Mine saves big by standardizing on MTU
Time, as they say, is money, and nowhere is that cliché more brutally evident than in a coal mine’s ceaseless circular parade of lumbering haul trucks. Loaded with either coal or the crushed rock that only hours earlier covered the seam from which that coal was mined, each giant vehicle’s route and routine is purposefully predictable: empty the dump bed. Return to the loading site to refill. Repeat.
The process sounds simple except when it isn’t, which is nearly always. The Hobet Mine, tucked into the woods of Boone County about forty miles south of Charleston, West Virginia, is as good an example as any of the extreme conditions mine haul trucks face every day. Like most surface coal mines, Hobet is encircled by a network of rough-cut, crushed gravel roadways that were clearly planned for point A-to-B efficiency with a lot more foresight than your average shopping mall parking lot. But that’s where the similarities end. Think lunar surface, with enough Olympic-class moguls to reduce the suspension of your family sedan to Jell-O in less time than you can say “Hello, Roadside Assistance?” Not surprisingly, there’s also an air filter-choking, omnipresent cloud of dust anytime the roadbed is in use, which is of course constantly. If there’s an earthly training ground for hell for motorized vehicles, this is surely it.

Repowering haul trucks onsite isn’t just a job, it’s an adventure.
The first thing you notice about Hobet Surface Mine 21 is that unless you know where it is— and I mean know exactly— you wouldn’t notice it at all.

Service vehicles and crews swarm a Komatsu haul truck during an onsite repowering job at the Hobet Mine.
